A great companion, these exotic birds are lot of fun to be with. Depending on t he type of bird, these pet birds can live a very long life and easily become an
integral part of our life. So before choosing the type of exotic bird that you want, consider these
things;
1) Cost : Exotic pet birds
range in prices from less than a hundred dollars to well over thousands of dollars. The other cost factor
associated with your bird includes cage, food, toys, vet bills, vitamins and other wellbeing products. Considering
these cost factors you should plan in advance, Is this particular bird one i can afford?
2) Time and Dedication : Pets
love to be loved and cared for, so make an assessment of how much time do you have to spend with your exotic bird?
If your work or nature doesn’t permit you to be at home enough, then you should better choose for some small
pet birds like Canary or Finch. Most of the exotic birds from the Parakeets and Parrots family are more kind
of a social bird and enjoy the company of their owners as they require a lot of care and attention from them. On an
average the life expectancy of parrots are around 50 years, so before making your decision this factor should be
considered, as these pet birds bond so closely with their owners that it is difficult for them to accept a new
owner.
3) Space : This is a very
important issue. You cannot skimp on cage space. The bird cages must be big enough for your pet bird to exercise
his wings. For example, the minimum suggested cage size for Canary and Finch is 60 cm long,
30 cm wide
and 30 cm tall, width is more important than height, as songbirds fly back and forth,
rather than up and down. Parrots also need their own space outside the cage, such as a play gym or bird stand. You
have to have enough space to accommodate this.
4) Noise or Sound level :
Parrots have high sound level, they will scream loudly and if you reside in an apartment building, a noisy parrot
can be very much annoying to your neighbors. So if you happens to reside in an apartment building then it would be
a better decision to keep smaller pet birds like Budgies, Cockatiels or Lovebirds. Yes, they do make
noise but not as loud as the bigger birds and can be a better option.
5) Mess and Destruction : Face
it, birds are messy. There is no way around it. When they eat food flies everywhere and sometimes they are not very
good at aiming those droppings into the bottom of the cage. They also love to chew on anything they can get their
beaks on. You have to be very careful when your bird is out of the cage so that he does not get into anything that
will harm him.
6) Diet : Most species of
exotic birds require a specialized diet to stay healthy. Canaries and finches will rarely take to formulated bird
feed, available as pellets, crumbles or mash. Instead, provide a finch seed mix, with oyster shell (for grit and
calcium) and fresh greens available every day. Most fresh fruits and vegetables are suitable. Find out what type of
diet your bird needs, and make sure you have a source to get it from. Some birds can be very finicky
eaters.
7) Socialization : Bonding and
attachment differ from species to species and your exotic pet birds are no different. Some exotic birds don’t like
to be handled, while others make a bonding relation with their owners. If you are looking for a social bird, be
prepared to devote the time and attention your bird requires.
8) Talking and Training :
People will choose parrots for their ability to talk. But keep in mind, that even in species known for their
talking ability, it varies among the individual bird. However, most parrots are highly intelligent and can be
trained to talk to a certain degree and even to do tricks.
Follow the above guidelines to find an exotic
pet bird that matches your lifestyle. Take my word - If you take proper care of your pet birds, they will become an
indistinguishable part of your life and you could have a friend for life! So, take great care of your Exotic
Birds.
