CockatielCockatiel or Nymphicus hollandicus originated from the continent of Australia that average twelve to fourteen inches in size and an average weight of eighty-eight to one hundred seventy eight grams. Cockatiels have an average lifespan of sixteen to twenty-five years and eat fresh vegetable and fruits.

These birds are also commonly called as small cockatoo or crested parrot. Cockatiels are usually colored when they are in the wild, but when domesticated, they have varied shared of gray, peach, yellow, white and orange. Cockatiel is able to express their disposition and actions using the raised crest of feathers on top of their head.

Cockatiel – What Makes Them Ideal As Pets

Cockatiels are ideal as pets because they are naturally sociable. They are highly intellectual compared with other species and very curious and oftentimes mischievous. A cockatiel that has been domesticated is very loving and likes riding on its breeder’s or owner’s head or shoulder. Their being too sociable will even make them join their owners while eating.

The most ideal cockatiels as pets are the male ones since they can whistle tunes and learn to talk. However, before you buy these birds as pets, make sure that you have the time and effort to care and domesticate them. When left alone, these birds will get bored and lonely that would lead to their death.

Where And How To Get Cockatiels For Pets

The most ideal as pet is the male cockatiel because it is very loving and quiet. You must get it young in order for you to train it well. The male bird can whistle and talk. Also, choose one that is hand-fed. The grey ones are cheaper than the colored ones such as the Pieds, Lutinos, or Whiteface. You choose either type depending on your allotted budget and taste. You can also opt to buy male and female cockatiels for breeding.

There are numerous breeders of cockatiels that you can find online or at your local pet shops.  Purchase the bird from reputable breeders and those that really knows how to care for these types of birds.

Cockatiel Caring

Make a good-sized cage from freshly cut apple tree branch or any hardwood branch that is safe from pesticides. Place some paper and softwood strips inside the cage since these birds like nibbling on them. These birds need fresh water all the time. Therefore, make sure that you always wash the glass bottle with soap, warm water and rinse thoroughly before it is filled with fresh water.

Cockatiels are sensitive to the smell of paints, Teflon fumes, and drafty places. Position the bird cage in an area that is often travelled so that family members can talk with the bird every time they pass by. Feed these birds with apple slices, kale, broccoli, collards, complete vitamin pellet mixed with seeds, and strips of beans. You may use old newspapers to line the bottom of the cage for droppings and change the paper at least twice a week.

It will take a lot of patience, but a cockatiel can be tamed and get it step on to the back of your hand.
