Moluccan Cockatoo
The Moluccan
Cockatoo is no different from the other species
of Cockatoos. They are equally aggressive and prone to bad
behaviors when they are neglected. This is one thing that
pet-owners have to be aware of should they decide to keep one
at home.
Known also as Salmon-Crested Cockatoos, the
Moluccan Cockatoos are raised from the Moluccas, east of
Indonesia. It is considered as the largest kind among White
Cockatoos today.
The Moluccan Cockatoo feeds mostly on
coconut fruit, fresh fruits, nuts, and seeds. For pet owners,
there are artificial mixtures available in pet shops escially
made for Cockatoos which contain the minerals and nutrients
they need to survive. At most, Moluccan Cockatoo can live up to
80 years.
What keeps the Moluccan Cockatoo interesting
is their high-level of intelligence. They can be taught simple
tricks and advanced tricks in the long run. Moluccan Cockatoo
are also very sociable but easily tensed. When this happens,
they stretch their crest givin them the notable Cockatoo
look.
Like most Cockatoos, the Moluccan Cockatoo
need long hours of bonding with its owners. At least six hours
a day or more is enough to keep them bubbly and energetic. If
neglected, the Moluccan Cockatoo tend to be violent. They too
are prone to self-mutilation so they must be kept supervised.
Plus they habitually pluck their feathers and bite.
Due to rampant bird trade, the Moluccan
Cockatoo has been listed as endangered specie, add to it
the gradual loss of their natural habitats that include
tropical rainforests and woodlands.
