The Blue Lorikeet

The Blue Lorikeet or Vini Peruviana scientifically, from the French Polynesian country in the borders of South Pacific Ocean is popular for its strikingly simple blue feathers with a shade of white on the chest up to its face and orange bill. This almost rare species of Lorikeet parrots are also known in such names as Tahiti Lorikeet, Blur Lory, or Indigo Lory.

The Blue Lorikeets can be found nesting in coconut trees especially during hatch season. They usually lay two up to three eggs that take 12 weeks to hatch. Aside from coconut mangroves, the forests and woodlands are some of the Blue Lorikeet’s common habitat. They feed mostly on insects and flower nectars and pollens and obtain food through their specially designed brush-like tongues.

Like many other exotic birds, like the Rainbow Lorikeets, the Blue Lorikeets are naturally lively and playful. They are very active in the wild or in captivity. They commonly travel in small teams and are always calling in loud pitches usually during feeding time.

With its energetic behavior and undemanding food requirements, the Blue Lorikeets are not hard to keep as pets. Their life span ranges from 15-20 years. They are becoming endangered though because of ecological invasion of rats and cats.

If you are planning on keeping Blur Lorikeets as pets, you will enjoy its company because of its bubbly character not to mention you can spend at least 10 years with them. The Blue Lorikeet can survive longer if properly taken care of. Although they can get by alone, they will be more productive and lively when joined by the same kind.
