The Green Naped
Lorikeet
Among all the
species of parrots, most people prefer the Green Naped
Lorikeet especially in Australia where it is abundant
because of its beautifully colored feathers, long life
span and undemanding diet.
The Green Naped Lorikeets are
marked by its navy blue colored head and red beaks and neck and
green-colored napped and body. Its tail is long and pointed
different from Australian lorry birds although they appear to
be similar. Naturally, they are always seen in groups in
freedom.
The Green Naped Lorikeet feeds mostly on
flower nectars and pollen, fruits, seeds and insects. It uses
its brush-like tongue to eat especially those in the wild.
Captive Green Naped Lorikeets though can also be fed with
artificially mixed foods available in pet shops.
The Green Naped Lorikeet can be found in
woodlands, tropical forests, and even in parks and gardens
where there are lush trees that they can live and breed. During
mating season, which occurs from January to August, the Green
Naped Lorikeet builds nests in humid places and lay up to three
eggs to hatch after 28 days.
The Green Naped Lorikeets have attractive
characteristics besides its colorful beauty. They are lively,
playful and friendly and are not afraid of humans. If you are
planning to keep one, you must provide a spacious cage with
cage guard to accommodate their slimy fluid droppings.
Additionally, put some toys and swings inside the cage to keep
them busy as they are often at play.
