The Red collared
lorikeet
The Red
Collared Lorikeets are special species of parrots living
in the woodlands and tropical rainforests of Australia.
They are special because of its colorful feathers that
stand out aesthetically among other kinds of birds.
Known scientifically as Trichoglossus
haematodus rubritorquis, the Red Collared Lorikeet is always
mistaken for Rainbow Lorikeet but what really identifies them
is the red streak on their neck that looks like a collar, thus
the name.
Naturally, Lorikeet parrots are sociable and
playful and the Red Collared Lorikeet is no exception. They are
always at play and habitually found in group constantly
calling. It is also natural for Red Collared Lorikeets to be
territorial especially during mating season so keeping them in
a sanctuary is not advisable. They are more productive in the
wild. In captivity, they are better kept in pair or in small
flocks.
Also, the Red Collared Lorikeets are not
sensitive when it comes to food. They survive on nectars and
pollens from flowers, insects, and fruits. Because they always
need to be hydrated, a bowl of fresh water must be kept close
to them if you are keeping one. Those in the wild usually nest
near the water. It is not advisable for Red Collared Lorikeets
to be given honey too because this may be bad for their organs.
In some parts of Australia where they are common, this practice
is highly prohibited.
Pet Lorikeet owners improvise their own food
for them. Usually, a preparation of bread crumbs and cereals
will make up for the minerals they should get naturally from
nectars and fruits. They can also be given vitamins high in
calcium.
