Use A Tube Bird Feeder For The Lesser Goldfinch
The lesser goldfinch is a common site at many birdfeeders. If you install, for example, a tube bird feeder in your backyard, and you supply it with the right type of food, you may see this small bird show up more frequently. You will notice the lesser goldfinch by color. The male of the species is a bright yellow color with black wing and tail feathers during the spring months. The females are a duller color, but they still have a pointed but notched tail and conical bill. The best way to ascertain the bird species is to view its tail. The American Goldfinch has white feathers at the base of its tail.
How to Attract the Lesser Goldfinch
To draw the lesser goldfinch in to your backyard, supply the right type of food in the right bird feeder. In terms of food, these birds prefer birdfeeders that are easy to get into and those that are filled with seeds. They do not exclusively consume bird seed, though. Lesser Goldfinches also require arthropods in their diet. The Lesser Goldfinch will eat caterpillars and larva located in trees and fruit. Many people use a particular combination of seed to attract these birds.
Select a tube bird feeder to lure the Lesser Goldfinch. The Lesser Goldfinch is attracted to spots where they can sit. They are typically a social bird and will often meal alongside one another. During breeding season the Lesser Golfinch becomes more agressive and less likely to eat with other Goldfinches. The tube bird feeder allows them to share this type of meal.
Tips for Success
Check out the following tips that will help you to attract the lesser goldfinch to your backyard.
1. Invest in a tube bird feeder and a feeder pole. Place it in an area that is some distance from regular human traffic.
2. The bird does not use trees as much as its cousins do, but it does prefer to remain within a few second’s flight from trees when accessing its food.
3.Utilize black-oil sunflower seeds or nyjer seed. Supply bird seeds regularly. The Lesser Goldfinch may search elsewhere for food if you keep your tube bird feeders empty.
Also, the Lesser Goldfinch loves a good bird bath. If you supply a bird bath, keep it close to their bird food. Having a birdbath and feeder in your yard will allow you to observe the birds for longer periods of time. A wonderful attribute in these birds is they will readily show themselves once they are used to the presence of humans, though they will likely not permit you to feed them directly.
