One thing you need to know about finches, it doesn’t matter what their breed is, finches like flying. They like places where they can fly freely.  Consider where they will live first before buying a pet finch.

If breeding them is part of your plan then the most advisable course of action is tp keep finches in pairs.  If that is so then make sure that you should meet the minimum requirement of a 30 inch cage.  Oviously more finches would mean a larger cage.  Finches stay out of the way of humans but finches never fly alone.

When you build a place for your pet birds, give them enough space to fly.  This allows them to be strong, happy, active, healthy and comfortable.  It exercises their muscles.  Keep in mind that the cage depends not only on the number of finches but the size of each bird counds.  There are breeds of finches that are very active and you don’t need a huge cage for them.  A medium sized one will do if they are comfortable.  Your finches might breed if they feel safe and secure.

Finches vary in size.  If you own the tri-colored nuns, spice and java rice finches, they are larger than the society, zebra and gouldians.  Of course they’ll need a bigger cage.  Others that are extremely active like the waxbills need an even larger cage so they will be comfortable.

When building the bird cage, keep in mind that aside from the size are the things you place inside.  Toys like perches and swings may look nice on their cage but it will do nothing for them if it’s overcrowded.  Allow them to fly in their cage.  Place plants and perches on the sides in order to provide them more flying room.

Make sure that the finches get enough sunlight for them to be comfortable.  Lighting must be present even at night.

It is important for finches to feel safe in their home. It is important for them to breed and thrive.
