History
These beautiful birds derived their intimate name from the love and intimacy they show each other. With around eight or nine different species that have been identified, these birds were first found in parts of Africa. Although no one knows exactly when these birds arrived into Australia, rumour has it that they were introduced to Australian soil around after the 1800′s. Since the mid 1900′s, strict quarantine regulations meant that it was extensively difficult to bring these birds into the country from overseas.
Appearance and species
The African Lovebirds actually come from the parrot niche. This variety of parrot measures a little more than twelve centimetres and come in a array of beautiful colors.
Out of the 8 or so species of African Lovebirds, only four can be readily found in Australia. The male and females look almost identical, making disguising between the two a little challenging.

Each variety in Australia look a little different in color, from the Fischer, Peachfaced, Masked and Nyasa types.
The Lovebird can come in a huge number of color permutations. For naming purposes, Lovebirds are often referred to according to their feather colour. For example, a blue white Fischer has a blue and white coloured body.
Temperament
Often more belligerent by nature, the Peachfaced variety is typically a lot more social and extraverted as well. You may want to be careful not to have Peacefaced birds sharing the cage with many others as fatal attacks can occur as this bird often likes to defend its space. Although with other birds they can get assertive, the same is not said for humans. In fact, with humans they are usually social and outgoing, making a suitable companion.
Lovebirds can try to escape cages and are quite smart birds, so you will want to ensure that the cage is properly secured. These birds also like to keep chewing, so its recommended that something like bamboo or cuttlefish that is untreated is available to them.
Food
Different seeds are the start of a recommended diet for these birds and a specialist peachfaced variety can sometimes be found from your local pet shop, otherwise simply a mix of seed for small parrots is ok. Usually, these mixes will include sunflower seed as well as about 5 other seed types. These birds will also enjoy bits of apple, banana, spinach and other types of greens.

General Health and Age
Apart from absolutely freezing temperatures, Lovebirds are quite content in most weather conditions. In the warmer months, you will still want to ensure that they are not overhearing and plenty of water should be available to them.
Expect a healthy and happy Lovebird to have a decent live of between 8-15 years.
Where To Keep Them
If you can spend a fair amount of time near the bird, a cage is perfectly fine. A Lovebird can be clipped and the cage opened inside the house if you want your pet to come out and socialise with you in person.
Compatibility
When it comes down to it, Lovebirds make really good pets in that they are caring, don’t require much from you and the ongoing costs are minimal. Just remember though, if you do decide to keep the bird in a small cage, it will want lots of attention. If you plan on keeping your bird in an aviary, then the bird won’t require as much interaction with you.
