Everyone who’s owned a cat knows that they constantly shed fur. However, health issues can sometimes lead to abnormal amounts of hair loss. This type of hair loss is known as alopecia and can mean that your cat is suffering from a major health problem. If you notice abnormal amounts of hair loss, you should be concerned as an owner. You’ll find that hair loss in felines falls into one of two main categories, pruritic and non-pruritic. Itchy skin is a symptom of pruritic hair loss, so cats often start biting, chewing, and licking themselves. Cats with non-pruritic hair loss often don’t have itchy skin, but the affected area can be painful.
Pruritic hair loss is usually caused by allergic reactions. Humans and felines can both suffer allergic reactions. Cats that are bitten by an insect or flea may develop dermatitis and start biting and scratching themselves more than usual. You should provide your cat with medication on a periodic basis that prevents insect problems. Switching brands of food may cause an allergic reaction. Your cat may also have one because of pollen, dust, or other irritants.
Ringworm is a fungus which can affect felines. It’s very contagious, and once it gets started under your cat’s fur, you may not even know it’s there until his fur begins to fall out. If your pet does indeed have ringworm, you’ll be able to see circular lesions in the areas where the hair falls out. Your vet will need to give your cat anti-fungal cream to help get rid of ringworm. The condition will usually go away on its on after three months, then it will take another three months for the hair to grow back.
Hyperthyroidism, dry skin, stress, injury, and Cushing’s disease are all other causes of feline hair loss. Feline symmetrical alopecia may also become a problem in some cats. Hormone injections can usually be used to treat this condition. It’s important not to try to treat the condition on your own if you don’t truly know what’s causing the hair loss.
