If you’re looking for a pet bird parrot, and you decide to go with a macaw, then you will have a few challenges ahead of you. You’ll need to be sure you have the time and attention to devote to this bird, not to mention enough space in which it can live comfortably. Yet if you have all that, you’re likely to be richly rewarded. These parrots, which are the largest and most brightly colored of the domesticated parrot bird breeds, are very sociable and active, and will keep you in great company.

If you’re hoping for a talking bird that will dazzle all your friends, then you may want to get something like an African Grey parrot rather than a macaw, because while it can learn some speech, it doesn’t speak it as clearly as other birds. It can also get rather loud at times. But all the other qualities of this bird, including the high intelligence and playfulness, make it a fascinating pet bird parrot to have. But because of this intelligence and its need for mental stimulation, you’ll need to spend a great deal of time with it.

A macaw will need quite a large pet bird cage, but will also need to be able to come out of the cage at certain points during the day, for exercise and social interaction. This not only means that you will have to find a cage large enough to allow it to spread and flap its wings inside, but that you’ll have to “parrot-proof” your house or apartment as well. This parrot loves to chew things but you should only give it toys of wood or rope rather than plastic, which it can break easily. And you need to protect things outside the cage that it might chew on and break into smaller pieces that it could swallow.

If you’re prepared for the time and effort needed for bird training, then getting a macaw may be just the right move for you. Having this sort of pet bird parrot can be exhilarating, as you learn together to interact on a level of intelligence you just won’t share with a lot of other kinds of birds. This parrot won’t be just a decoration in your home, but it could become a valued, affectionate companion for a great many years.

The first rule of thumb for getting your pet parrot a bird cage is the same as it is for any pet bird: you must get a cage that is big enough. Every bird needs to be able to spread its wings completely wide and flap them inside its cage, both for the sake of exercise and for getting rid of loose feathers. This means, in the case of a parrot, that the cage should be as large as you can get. Good bird health partly depends on your parrot having the space to move around and even climb a bit if it wants to.

Other size considerations apply to the construction and contents of the cage itself. The bars need to be the correct width apart. If they are too close together, the parrot might get its beak or a toe stuck in the space between them. On the other hand, get a cage with the bars spaced too widely, and either the bird’s head could get caught, or the bird might slip between the bars altogether. Even when people let their parrot out of their pet bird cages regularly, there are still times when a bird needs to stay inside and be secure.

Aside from food trays that are easily reachable inside the bird cage, ideally the cage will also contain a variety of perches and several different toys. Parrots are such intelligent birds that they need a great deal of mental stimulation, and playing with a bird toy will provide some of that. These toys should be made of wood or rope, rather than plastic, so the parrot can’t break them and swallow plastic pieces. Perches should be of varying thicknesses so the bird’s toes are exercised by gripping in different ways.

One kind of bird cage that is especially handy for parrots is one that has a “play top,” which allows the bird to perch on top of the cage when you let it out. This is one of the places for pet bird feeding that will give it a secure spot and keep it out of the traffic of the rest of the house even when it’s not confined. The important thing in selecting a cage is to find one that helps your parrot feel secure, and gives it a comfortable place to return to when it’s time to go back into the cage.
