To stay healthy your birdie requires to be provided with correct nourishment, which can be attained through a balanced diet. Your parrot food should never consist of only seeds, as they lack crucial nutrients and vitamins that are required to keep your bird healthy.  Keeping your exotic birds on an all seed diet is a sure way to make your bird sick.

Parrot foods based on all seed are among the most common causes of malnutrition encountered in pet birds. Just as we get our daily requirement of nutrition from different sources of food, so does your bird requires an assortment of quality foods to stay healthy.

The easiest way of providing a complete parrot food is the commercial pellets, as they provide the right amount of vitamins, proteins and minerals, which an all seed diet can never provide. Studies have been conducted and results prove that feeding the pet birds with pallets, as compared to seeds increases their life span.

If currently your parrot food consists of all seed, then you need to gradually bring down the quantity of your feed and bit by bit increase other foods to your bird's feeding over the course of several weeks. If during this course your bird rejects to eat and continues to do so for a couple of day or starts to puke or has diarrhea, then you should take them to see a veterinarian.

Although pellets are capable of providing all the nutrition and are considered a complete parrot food, you just cannot feed your parrots with pellets alone as your bird will grow bored with it. So to overcome this situation you should include a verity of other foods in their diet. You can include fresh vegetables, fruits, crackers, cereals and bread in their diet to add verity.

You can also introduce some boiled chicken and eggs as a part of your parrot food once or twice a week, as it's a good way to provide protein, but it should be done in moderation.

Also make sure to always supply your parrots with fresh and clean drinking water. Although many liquid supplements are available in the market, but you should only give those supplements in consultation with the veterinarian, as these supplement mix may cause bacteria to grow in the water, which decreases your bird's water intake causing kidney damage or even death.

Caring for proper sanitization is also very important factor affecting your bird's health. Make sure to cleanup the scraps after your parrot has finished eating. It will be good if you clean the food and water bowls weekly, this helps to prevent any bacterial build up.

Our pet birds can eat almost anything that we eat, but should we give them all those things? What are those eatables which should never be a part of your parrot food ? You should never give them chocolate, caffeine, avocados, alcohol, kidney and lima beans as these are dangerous for them and should be avoided.

The kind of parrot food you choose for your pet parrots will determine their healthy and happy life. As an owner and guardian of your pet bird it's your responsibility to take proper care for providing a balanced parrot food for them.
