Choosing Among the Best Exotic
Pet Birds
People like
to keep pets for different reasons; some keep them as a
companion, some keep them for affection and some as help. Among
different kinds of pets, Exotic birds
are the most popular one; they are not only attractive in
their looks, with those beautiful vibrant colored
feathers, but are also easier to care for, than those
furry cat or a disorderly dog. However, choosing the best
exotic pet
bird is rather puzzling as there are several
different species to choose from. We would look at some
of the most popular exotic birds:
Sun
Conures – Being 12 inches in length, they
are one of the most popular medium sized pet bird. Conures size
makes it a favorable choice for people who only afford a
limited space for their pet bird, as they require less living
space than larger parrots. As the name suggests the feathers of
Sun Conures are colored with radiant hues of orange, yellow,
red, green, and blue. Like parrots, they too can be taught to
speak, the only problem is sometimes they overdo the talking
and becomes quite noisy. They have a tendency to scream and
screech and may not be an ideal for those living in apartment
buildings. They have a life expectancy of around 20 to 35
years.
African
Grays - These birds are believed to be
amongst the most talkative amongst exotic birds, they can learn
a vocabulary of up to 2,000 words. These birds are also quite
brilliant, but they can get demanding and easily bored.
However, African Greys can also be quite affectionate - perfect
for owners who want sensible companions. They may live from 50
to 70 years.
Budgerigars – They are
widely known as the most common pet bird and serve as good
introduction to owning feathered pets. They are about 7 inches
long and weigh about 35 grams, with a life expectancy of about
12 to 14 years. Budgerigars are intelligent and social birds
and enjoy the company of humans and other Budgerigars. Though
they can be taught to speak, they only have limited vocabulary.
Budgerigars are hardy birds and usually remain very
healthy.
Cockatiels – Cockatiels are among
the popular pet birds of the world. As a member of the parrot
family, they have the ability to mimic and are quite
intelligent and social bird, who enjoys the company of their
owner. They have a life span of around 15 to 20
years.
Parrotlets – A member of
the Amazon
Parrots family, they are one of the smallest species
of parrots, with a growth of about 5 inches and a life span of
around 20 years. They doesn’t posses the amazing talking
ability when compared with their close relative the ‘Amazon
Parrots’, but when compared with other small parrots, they are
quite good. They are considered ideal for pet owners who live
in apartment houses as they are less noise compared to other
exotic birds.
So when
choosing your pet bird, do remember to take into consideration
the comfort of your pet, avoid larger birds as pet if you only
have a limited space to provide. Remember a healthy and happy
pet can bring lots of happiness and togetherness among your
family members.
